Green Laver / Sea Lettuce (Ulva Lactuca)
A great source of vegetable protein, sea lettuce (also known as green Laver) contains an abundance of potassium, iron, magnesium, calcium, and iodine; known to contain bioactive compounds that have been shown to counteract free radicals. In one study, Ulva extracts were found to activate an enzymatic pathway leading to increased glutathione production. Laver is extremely rich in vitamin A in the form of beta carotene and gamma carotene, compounds that have been shown to significantly reduce the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.

Laver contains natural photosynthetic pigments that give its vibrant green colour and a high concentration of a-chlorophyll, b-chlorophyll, xanthophylls, lutein, beta and gamma carotene, siphonxantine and siphonein. Chlorophyll can protect healthy cells and bodily tissue by increasing phase II biotransformation enzymes, which promote optimal liver health and therefore support the body’s natural elimination of potentially harmful toxins.

Just one 30g (hydrated) serving of Sea Lettuce provides over 400 percent of the RDI for Iodine, which displaces dangerous "halides" such as; fluoride, bromide and chlorine in the thyroid. It is antioxidant, promotes proper hormone balance, protects from radiation and kills bacteria and fungi. Laver makes the perfect addition to soups, chowders, stir fries and stews. Simply add to your favourite dishes (we love sea lettuce pancakes).

Golden Seamoss (Gracilaria)
Naturally high in iron, calcium, magnesium, and other vital minerals, Seamoss also contains iodine which can promote a healthy thyroid function and balance metabolism, helping to maintain a healthy body.

Consuming Seamoss can assist in removal of mucus from the intestinal tract so is useful as part of any detox or clean eating routine. Clearing this mucus helps to repair the lining of the gut, allows for greater absorption of vitamins and increases bioavailability of nutrients in other food.
The minerals found in Seamoss are thought to contribute to:

Increased energy
Healthy hair, skin and nails
A healthy immune system
Muscle and joint recovery (great post workout)
Repairing cellular damage and stress, great after any illness or operation.
Remineralisation
Post partum support
A healthy heart
Improved libido

Purple Seamoss (Gracilaria)
Same genus as Golden Seamoss, but thought to grow in deeper water and be slightly higher in nutrients.

DR SEBI SAYS: Gracilaria grows in warm climates such as the Caribbean. Dr Sebi talks about Chondrus Chrispus but is referring at times to Gracilaria. Studies have been done on both genus confirming benefits of each. It is thought that Gracilaria is more effective at clearing mucus and assisting detoxification, whilst Chondrus Crispus is slightly more nutrient dense, useful in protecting the body against inflammation, supporting neurological health and recovery, and being slightly higher in pectins which may help to protect the body from radiation.

Irish Moss (Chondrus Crispus)
A red algae that’s great for skin and well known for thyroid support. Also called Carrageen, it is variable in colour ranging from green to dark red. Hand harvested from the pristine waters of the Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of County Clare, this Irish moss is rich in vitamins A, B, C, D, E, F and K, proteins and antioxidants (beta carotene). Contains essential minerals including large quantities of calcium, iodine, sulphur and potassium, but also bromine, magnesium, iron, manganese, phosphorus, selenium, zinc, and pectin, making it an ideal superfood to speed up recovery from illness & protect the body against inflammation.

Chondrus Crispus can help soften skin and strengthen hair, and will work well in bath salts or a bath bag for detoxifying and skin-softening properties.
